Palworld sold eight million units in its first six days of early access and reached over two million concurrent players on Steam, making it the second-highest played game of all time on the platform. As of February 22, 2024, the game has sold over 15 million units had attracted a global audience of more than 25 million players, making it one of the best-selling PC games.
Palworld is being developed and published by Pocketpair, an independent doujin soft company based in Shinagawa, Tokyo. It is their second early access open world survival project, following Craftopia. Like it, it uses gameplay mechanics reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but has added creature-collecting mechanics popularized by the Pokémon franchise. Pocketpair said that Pokémon was not one of their main inspirations. According to CEO Takuro Mizobe, the concept of Palworld is based on Ark: Survival Evolved, which also had monster companions in dinosaurs; the survival mechanics and in-game tasks were inspired by Rust. RimWorld was also cited as a major inspiration for the game.
I’ve literally played this game every day for over six years, even with the family as we would take turns. The new update has ruined it! Horrible layout and tried to make the game like others with a zigzag pattern. I’ve deleted the app. So sad.

It’s weird that Another World makes an appearance on Beat the Backlog, as it was only a few weeks ago that I was telling our Tom (prior to his excellent video review) that the gameplay shown in Jump Ship’s trailer to Somerville really reminded me of the classic Amiga adventure game. It’s a game I owned on the SNES some 20-plus years ago, and I was a combination of not smart or patient enough to complete it at the time, despite loving the bleak setting and impactful scenes. And then, entirely randomly, after scrolling through 50 pages of shovelware on the Switch eShop, I stumbled across Another World again and quickly decided to splash out a whole £1.79 to overcome the ancient shame of having never reached the end.
The company that produced Another World, Delphine Software, has since gone into administrative receivership and Another World remains their most recognized game. Paul Cuisset’s best-selling 1992 game Flashback, also released by Delphine but created without any involvement from Chahi, features similar gameplay and graphics and makes a few nods to Another World, including the use of personal force fields in combat, a nearly identical end text in the ending cutscene, and an almost exact motion recreation of the gun pickup cutscene. A very similar plot premise was used in 1999’s Outcast by Infogrames Entertainment, also from France. The game also had a big influence on several other game designers, especially in Japan. Fumito Ueda cited Another World as an inspiration for his creation of Ico. Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear series, said it was one of the five games that influenced him the most. Video game designer Goichi Suda called it his favourite game.
