Pokémon Legends: Arceus is an action role-playing game that maintains the core gameplay of past mainline entries. The player can freely explore the game map, which is divided into five large areas of individual biomes. Each time the player enters an area, they spawn in a camp and can fast travel to other camps in the same area. Outside of traversing the landscape on foot, the player can unlock rideable Pokémon which can travel faster, swim across bodies of water, climb cliffs, or fly. In each area, Pokémon wander the landscape and certain habitats and will interact with both the player and their environments. Some will actively avoid the player, while others act aggressively, and some exhibit other specific behaviors. “Alpha” Pokémon – larger, more powerful versions of the Pokémon – can also be found in the areas. The game world having multiple areas and a hub system instead of fully open world gameplay resulted in reviewers comparing Legends: Arceus with the Monster Hunter series. Reviewers also drew comparisons between Pokémon Legends: Arceus and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, noting apparent similarities in both gameplay and art style.
Since Scarlet/Violet is releasing less than a year after Legends: Arceus, one is left to wonder how much of an improvement could have possibly been made in that amount of time. Of course, the pandemic certainly shuffled around release plans which means that Legends: Arceus was developed long before Scarlet/Violet’s gameplay was determined. Could the Pokemon Company have predicted that open-world design was going to be that successful? If Scarlet/Violet does just as well could we see a bigger commitment to a larger Pokémon game or will it take several more years of inching towards what fans have always wanted?
You can experience a new style of adventure, with a world that you’re free to explore at your leisure and not in an order dictated by the story. You will, of course, journey to hone your skills as a Pokémon Trainer, but many more discoveries and stories await you. Meet a variety of people and Pokémon, and adventure in the world of Pokémon the way you want to.
Now I’m not sure if you would just get a Pikachu like Ash and go with it in all the regions, or perhaps get a new starter in each region. Maybe the Pikachu’s level doesn’t matter, and all that really matters is that you get a new special move in each region, think Iron Tail in Hoenn, which you could only get in that way. Not by leveling.
Is Arceus sort of like a fusion of what Pokemon Snap was dreaming of, and what Pokemon Go enables with augmented reality on phones, and what Breath of the Wild was to RPGs? Yes. Is it also a more traditionally open-world RPG than I’d prefer? Yes. But I can see where this is going. Whenever Nintendo leaps forward again with a next-gen console, Arceus might be a template for its future game franchises.

Been playing a lot of civ6 and Stellaris lately, looking for more games where you can take over the galaxy/world with a larger focus on military then civ and preferably more in the modern/future eras. Any suggestions are appreciated thanks for your time.
